This week in St Marychurch: FA Cup, food, music and local news

Welcome to the first Friends of St Marychurch weekly roundup.

St Marychurch is having one of those weeks where there is always something to look forward to: a big FA Cup afternoon at Plainmoor, live music, good local food, creative workshops and plenty happening in and around the Precinct. Here is the useful stuff worth knowing about.

FA Cup Saturday — make a day of it in St Marychurch

Torquay United host AFC Stoneham at Plainmoor on Saturday 19 September, 3pm, in the Emirates FA Cup Second Qualifying Round. Tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for under-18s. St Marychurch Precinct is around a 0.6-mile, 14-minute walk from the ground, so it is a handy place to meet, eat, shop or have a drink before heading over. Read the official ticket information.

Food news: The Bay Tree has a fresh start

The Bay Tree Café has changed hands, with a new menu and a new Facebook page. Breakfast is served all day, with light bites, sandwiches, lunches, jacket potatoes and takeaway also available. It is closed Mondays and open Tuesday–Sunday, 9am–2.30pm; hot food is served until 2pm. The Dolphin kitchen also returns today for its Community Lunch, served 12pm–2pm.

A busy weekend for music and making

Friday brings a Mosaic Workshop at Torbay Scrapstore, 6 Fore Street, 6.30pm–8.30pm. On Saturday, live music is on locally: Out of the Box play at The Crown & Sceptre, 8.30pm–11pm, while Carrie Audit is at St Marychurch & Babbacombe Conservative Club.

Looking ahead, Be Spoken, the Crown’s poetry and spoken-word open mic, is on Monday 21 September; the Conservative Club hosts Music Bingo on Wednesday 23 September; and Torbay Scrapstore has a Needle-Felted Pouch Workshop that evening. See the full What’s On guide.

The Precinct: shops, ideas and new faces

The local traders directory has kept growing this week. It now includes recent additions such as Sauced for vintage fashion and streetwear, South Devon Tattoo Company, Papa Johns, Bradleys Estate Agents, ItsSo Travel and John Lake Estate Agents. The directory also has the latest Bay Tree Café update, so it is a useful place to check before a visit. Browse local traders.

Save the date: Stellar x Sauced pop-up

Sauced will host My Stellar Stack on Saturday 3 October, 9am–6pm, at 44 Fore Street. Pop in to browse handmade jewellery alongside Sauced’s vintage and streetwear collection. See the event details.

A new attraction worth knowing about

The South Devon Pottery Museum & Café is now open in St Marychurch. It is a genuinely welcome addition to the area’s visitor offer, alongside the Model Village and Bygones — and a chance to discover a proper piece of South Devon history. Read our welcome to the museum.

Community matters

The new St Marychurch Litter Pickers group launched today, meeting outside The Dolphin. The group will meet on the first and third Thursday of every month — equipment is supplied and there is coffee and a chat afterwards. On Tuesday 22 September at 2pm, an informal digital help drop-in is planned at the Precinct Centre for anyone wanting help with a phone, tablet or laptop.

There is also still time to have your say on Torbay Council’s proposed school 20mph zones, including one around All Saints Babbacombe Primary School. The consultation closes on Wednesday 30 September. Read the consultation and take part.
